Lakeland Green Slate Chippings

Posted on 17th June 2022

Lakeland green slate chippings have a wide range of uses for homes and gardens up and down the UK, from paths and driveways to retaining walls, raised beds, ponds, and individual sanding stones.

Sourced direct from the quarry at Elterwater in the hills of Langdale Valley in the heart of the Lake District, our green slate aggregates display a light green colour which brightens beautifully when wet with the occasional flecks of red and white.

Lakeland slate is renowned for being one of the world’s hardest, most durable slates because it is a metamorphic volcanic stone from the Ordovician period that was formed 450-500 million years ago.

The shape of the slate chippings is angular and relatively flat, which makes it the perfect solution for a variety of garden landscaping projects such as domestic driveaways, paths, parking spaces, and planting borders.

If you are looking for a garden landscaping solution that is low maintenance and will save you time and money, green slate aggregates are the best choice. Ideal for weed prevention too, the slate will help retain moisture in your soil during long hot summer spells.

Rest assured that these slate chippings are unlikely to change the PH levels of ponds and soil because of their metamorphic geological composition, therefore they are suitable for planting borders and alpine and rockery gardens.

They are also a fantastic choice for ponds and water features because they are fish friendly. However, we do recommend washing the slate chippings before use in your garden.

Our green slate decorative aggregates also have a lower carbon footprint than most other garden chippings on the market because we deliver them direct from the quarry to you.
