Planning Your Outdoor Patio

Posted on 18th November 2022

You might not know this but autumn/winter is a fantastic time to start planning and carrying out garden landscaping jobs. If you have been thinking about redesigning your patio, pathways, drives or walls there is no better time than the present.

Getting your garden patio prepared for the following year means that you are best making a start now. If you are unsure of where to start when it comes to planning and designing a patio, let us help you out with a few tips.

Planning

It might sound old fashioned but planning out your design on a simple A4 piece of paper is the best way to get started. You will need to take into account the shape and size of the area you wish to create and the size will depend on how you intend to use it.

For example, if you have an existing outdoor furniture set that you wish to keep, the size of your new patio will need to accommodate it with some added space for some freedom of movement.

The shape of your patio is the next thing to consider. You may choose circular, square, rectangular or triangular depending on where the patio will be located.

Choosing materials

Choosing the right patio slabs can be a difficult decision to make. At Stone & Surfaces Direct we have a beautiful range of natural stone and porcelain paving to accent your patio.

Our paving stone catalogue includes limestone, quartzite, sandstone, and porcelain paving slabs in a range of sizes and colours to suit your individual space.

Pattern

Once you have your patio size, shape and materials chosen, it’s time to consider how you will lay the stone for your patio.

You may choose random patterning for your design or a pattern with a clean-cut, polished appearance. The decision is entirely up to you.

Cleaning and maintenance

To ensure your paving stays looking good year-round, we recommend cleaning it every 6 months. If you are using a power washer on your patio do with caution because this can cause damage to the stone and risk lifting the joints.

The use of a good brush with warm soapy water will clean your paving adequately. We also recommend using a sealant on your stone that is suited to the extremes of UK weather.

We also recommend the use of the Ceetect Intensive Cleaner available on our website.
