Reviews

Lakeland Green Slate Chippings are direct from the quarry at Broughton Moor in the heart of the Lake District. This stone has a light green colour which brightens when wet and has the occasional flecks of a white spa. The shape is angular and relatively flat, which means it is perfect for garden slate chippings.

Lakeland Green Slate Chippings are known to be one of the world's hardest, most durable slates as it is a metamorphic volcanic stone from the Ordovician period that was formed 450-500 million years ago. The geology of the rock means it is also ideal for domestic driveways, paths or parking spaces.

Additional key features of Lakeland Green Slate Chippings:

  • The 40mm Lakeland Green Slate Chippings have a thicker depth than some other slates and are stronger, which means they will resist breaking under heavy use. This is ideal for driveway chippings or parking spaces and will require minimal maintenance and the occasional top-up.
  • The geological composition of Lake District slate chippings means they are unlikely to change the PH levels of ponds or soil and are therefore suitable for planting borders and alpine and rockery gardens.
  • This slate is also a great choice for ponds and water features and is fish friendly (wash before use).
  • This slate has a lower carbon footprint than most other decorative aggregates sold as we deliver direct from the quarry.

PLEASE NOTE: Bulk bags of 40mm Lakeland Green Slate Chippings are 900kg from Stone & Surfaces Direct (many other suppliers offer 700-800kg under the term bulk bag). With Stone & Surfaces Direct, you get 7.5 - 15% more slate chippings.

The attached information includes a quality certificate which will show the consistency of the aggregates size grading. Many aggregate suppliers do not provide this or carryout these controls which means the aggregate can have significant proportions of very small pieces to dust. In addition the material performance report provides the geological composition of the aggregate, and its physical and chemical properties.

Burlington Aggregates

Elterwater Quarry

Our Westmorland Green slate aggregate is green in colour and in its environmental credentials, as it is processed from the quarry overburden and offcuts derived from the production of the roofing slate used on iconic historical buildings such as Buckingham Palace and Tower Bridge, in London.

Elterwater Quarry

Location

The quarry is situated at the foot of the Langdale valley, Nr Coniston, Cumbria, where slate has been extracted since the middle of the nineteenth century. Elterwater is pale green in colour and is a metamorphic volcanic stone from the Ordovician period, and thus formed 450-500 million years ago. The geology of the rock means it is one of the most durable and hard-wearing natural stones available and as a result ideal for use in a wide range of applications such as roofs, paving, walls, and as an aggregate for driveways and various areas around a house or building.
