The South Lakeland Blue paddlestones are from the Kirkby in Furness quarry in the southern Lake District fells in Cumbria. The stone has a mid to dark blue appearance when wet and a pale blue/grey appearance when dry with some occasional natural brown flecks of colour.
The slate emanates from the Silurian period and is over 450million years old.
This British slate is renowned for its strength, durability and colour fastness.
The shape is angular and relatively flat and larger in size than 40mm slate chippings, ranging typically between 50 and 125mm in size, making blue slate paddlestones ideal for using to cover pond liners or as a grading element in rockeries and planting beds.
Lake District slate's geological composition means they are unlikely to change the PH levels of ponds or soil and are therefore suitable for planting borders and a great choice for ponds and water features as it is fish friendly (wash before use).
The attached information includes a quality certificate which will show the consistency of the aggregates size grading. Many aggregate suppliers do not provide this or carryout these controls which means the aggregate can have significant proportions of very small pieces to dust. In addition the material performance report provides the geological composition of the aggregate, and its physical and chemical properties.
Based at Barrow In Furness, Cumbria, Burlington Aggregates are experts in the extraction and processing of natural slate, limestone and sand aggregates from five Lake District quarries.
Our Westmorland Green slate aggregate is green in colour and in its environmental credentials, as it is processed from the quarry overburden and offcuts derived from the production of the roofing slate used on iconic historical buildings such as Buckingham Palace and Tower Bridge, in London.
The quarry is situated at the foot of the Langdale valley, Nr Coniston, Cumbria, where slate has been extracted since the middle of the nineteenth century. Elterwater is pale green in colour and is a metamorphic volcanic stone from the Ordovician period, and thus formed 450-500 million years ago. The geology of the rock means it is one of the most durable and hard-wearing natural stones available and as a result ideal for use in a wide range of applications such as roofs, paving, walls, and as an aggregate for driveways and various areas around a house or building.
